Aaron Carter‘s long struggle with addiction has been remembered by his heartbroken twin sister Angel.

At the beginning of last November, Aaron’s housekeeper found him dead at home aged 34 of what the coroner ruled was an accidental overdose.

An autopsy has since revealed that the actor and singer drowned in the bath after consuming Xanax and huffing, TMZ reported.

In an extraordinary intervention in April, prior to the publication of the autopsy results, Aaron’s mother Jane put out a grisly set of pictures of the scene of his death and insisted he was the victim of a crime rather than an overdose.

Angel has now informed People she has not talked to Jane since the photos went out, a move she described as ‘a true invasion of privacy and something that Aaron would’ve never wanted the public to see. Aaron dying was the worst possible outcome for all of us. My brother deserves to be here.’

She devastatingly looked back on Aaron’s years of drug problems, which followed a childhood ‘filled with emotional abuse, dysfunction and addiction,’ she said.

Aaron, who leaves behind a one-year-old son Prince by his fiancée Melanie Martin, led a life blighted by substance abuse, racking up multiple arrests and rehab stints.

Angel, who held possession of Aaron’s ashes between the cremation and the ceremony when they were interred, used to cling to hope that he would recover.

She had to restrain herself from crying as she remembered: ‘I just kept waiting for him to snap out of it. But he never did.’

Aaron plunged even further into his addictions after his sister Leslie died in 2012 of a prescription drug overdose at the age of just 25.

The family tragedies came thick and fast for Aaron, who also lost his father Robert Carter to an apparent heart attack in 2017.

In the rehab trip he underwent after his father’s demise, the doctors deduced that Aaron was suffering from multiple personality disorder and schizophrenia.

Angel shared in her new interview that she feels ‘the beginning of the end’ for Aaron was the shattering losses of Leslie and Robert. ‘Aaron was already in a bad place, but it was like a domino effect,’ she explained.

‘He wanted so badly to be happy. He really fought to the end, but he just had too many problems to be fixed. He’d become this person who we no longer recognized. I don’t even think he recognized himself,’ said Angel.

She has now thrown herself into work with a children’s mental health organization On Our Sleeves so that she can disrupt the ‘generational dysfunction.’

‘It’s much easier to raise a strong child than to fix a broken adult,’ said Angel, who shares her daughter Harper, four, with her husband Corey Conrad.

‘Something positive has to come from all this. I refuse to allow Aaron to have died in vain. I want Aaron’s legacy to be more than those final years of his life.’

Aaron’s autopsy results showed he had consumed alprazolam, which is a generic form of Xanax, and inhaled compressed difluoroethane, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, TMZ reported.

He inhaled compressed difluoroethane, a propellant used in cans of compressed air, a practice commonly known as ‘huffing.’

Aaron was ‘incapacitated while in the bathtub due to the effects’ of the substances, according to officials.

The body was found in his home November 5, 2022. Authorities said in the report that the entertainer, under the influence of the substances, ‘slipped under the water’ and drowned.’

Coroner’s officials in January ruled out drowning as his primary cause of death, TMZ reported, as medical examiners did not detect any water in his lungs.

Melanie Martin, who was Carter’s fiancée and shared a child with him, told the outlet that the release of the autopsy did not bring closure about for her.

‘It claims death is by drowning but also adds he was wearing a t-shirt and necklace in the bathtub which doesn’t make sense, why would he be in a bathtub with clothes on?’ Melanie said.

She continued: ‘I am still in shock and still miss Aaron every day. I don’t understand the chain of events and this report only has us asking more questions.’

Melanie previously told the outlet that she felt that the singer had been felled by his drug abuse.

She said she had turned into authorities his phone, which included a text message exchange in which Carter said that he owed an unnamed person $800 for an undisclosed substance.

In the alleged exchange, according to Melanie, the singer told the other party he was conversing with that he no longer wanted the substance.

The other party demanded the $800 in the text, Melanie said, at which point Aaron asked if he was being threatened, which was the last communication in the exchange.

The late singer’s mother Jane Carter shared images of the bathtub and home he died in last month in a bid to bring more attention to the probe of his passing.

Jane said she didn’t believe that her son’s death was the result of a drug overdose, but rather foul play, in sharing the images of the home taken the day of her son’s death.

Another image showed a towel and a hooded sweatshirt on the floor of the bathroom Aaron was found in, and a toilet in the bathroom.

Jane said that Aaron’s family and friends had fully supported her in posting the images from the painful day, in an effort to garner further attention on the case from law enforcement.

She said that there ‘should have been at least an investigation’ into the premature death, and that ‘because of [her] son’s mental illness and prescription drug issues [the police] just wanted it to be something easy that they didn’t have the time or inclination to address.’

Jane added: ‘We want justice. We want answers. There are people who must be held accountable.’

Speaking with TMZ Live in March, Jane Carter said that her late son was harassed online by ‘number of people’ who she felt could be suspects in his death. She added that law enforcement did not see Aaron in person when they conducted a welfare check at his domicile.

Jane Carter said that while her son battled drug addiction, she didn’t suspect him to be self-harming. ‘He was an addict, but I don’t think he wanted to die,’ Jane said. ‘I don’t think he would have been doing that much of that aerosol.’
