Multiple people have been injured after a car crash forced a vehicle onto a footpath before careening through a group of pedestrians.

Emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle colliding with pedestrians along Burwood Road in inner-west Sydney‘s Burwood at about 12:25am on Sunday.

A total of seven people, five pedestrians and two passengers of a Toyota Camry, were injured during the incident and taken to various hospitals to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The 19-year-old driver of a Ford Ranger that mounted the footpath was arrested at the scene before being taken to Burwood Police Station where he is assisting police inquiries.

The Ford Ranger is believed to have hit the Toyota Camry – which was being used as a ride-share vehicle – while it accepted a fare before crashing through five pedestrians and coming to a standstill after colliding with a stationary vehicle.

NSW Police confirmed in a statement that officers from the Burwood Area Command have established a crime scene that has been examined by ‘specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit’.

‘As investigations continue traffic diversions have been implemented and motorists are urged to avoid the area,’ a statement from NSW Police reads.

Anyone with information about the incident has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
