Queensland has become the third state within 24 hours to axe mandatory masks on public transport.

Within hours, commuters in the Sunshine state will no longer need to wear face masks on public transport, taxis, rideshares or commercial shuttles.

The same rules apply when waiting on a platform or stop, taxi rank or pick-up area.

It comes after South Australia and NSW scrapped the Covid-19 restriction on Monday – a move NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet described as common sense.

But one state that won’t be following suit is Victoria with Daniel Andrews standing firm.

‘The national cabinet only a short while ago made changes to the mandatory (isolation) periods,’ he told reporters on Tuesday.

‘We’re all looking at these rules, but I don’t have any announcements to make today about masks – but rest assured we’re looking into those matters and all COVID rules.’

Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory are the only remaining jurisdictions where masks must be worn on public transport.

Queenslanders still need to wear a mask in healthcare settings, residential aged care and disability accommodation.

Masks are still recommended wherever you can’t socially distance.

‘I ask everyone to respect people’s individual rights to feel safe and to wear masks when they feel it’s appropriate,’  Queensland health minister Yvette D’Ath said.

‘We certainly encourage people to wear masks and for those who need to for safety reasons, particularly if they’re in the vulnerable cohort.’

Queenslanders are reminded masks are also required for the next five days after ending isolation for Covid-19.

Mask wearing will now be voluntary on public transport  except Victoria and ACT but it is advised in certain situations

NSW will also scrap mandatory masks on all modes of transport, including taxis and ride-hailing services from Wednesday.

‘Continuing to wear a mask in crowded areas will be particularly important for people who have underlying health conditions or who are vulnerable to Covid-19 infection for other reasons,’ NSW health Minister Brad Hazzard said.

‘Wearing a mask in these settings will not only protect those around you, but will also reduce your risk of infection.’
