TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is closing his River Cottage restaurant in Winchester, four months after he shut another branch in Bristol. 

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall said he’s closing his River Cottage Kitchen restaurant in Winchester due to ‘unprecedented challenges from Covid-19‘. 

The restaurant in Abbey Mill Gardens closed its doors in March following the Government lockdown and now it has been revealed it will not re-open. 

A notice on their website says: ‘We all face unprecedented challenges from Covid-19 and with a heavy heart, we have made the very difficult and sad decision that River Cottage Kitchen in Winchester will be closing permanently.’

It’s not yet known how many staff will lose their jobs. 

The restaurant’s Bristol branch in Clifton closed in early March after seven years of trading. 

Hugh expressed his disappointment at the closure of the Bristol branch but said it would enable the business to concentrate on its other sites and the expansion of ‘River Cottage HQ’ in Devon.  

He’s the latest celebrity chef in the doldrums because of coronavirus hitting trade.    

Rick Stein axed his restaurants in Porthleven, Cornwall, and in Marlborough, Wiltshire, at the start of July.

Born in Hampstead, London, 55-year-old Eton and Oxford-educated dad-of-four Hugh established River Cottage HQ in Dorset in 2004. 

The operation is now based at Park Farm near Axminster, Devon. 

River Cottage Holdings, the restaurants’ parent company, was expected to report significant losses for the second year in a row after the closure of the Bristol branch.  

In addition to holding the the three River Cottage Kitchen restaurants, the company also holds the licenses to the celeb chef’s cookbooks and cookery school.

His early TV series include Cook On The Wild Side and TV Dinners in which he startled viewers when he flambéed and puréed a human placenta to then serve as pâte during one episode. 

In November 2015, he filmed Hugh’s War On Waste with the BBC and began a campaign to reduce consumer waste in the UK. 

The two programmes focused on food and clothing waste, both by supermarkets and by shoppers in their own homes. 

In 2018, he filmed Britain’s Fat Fight where he asked food producers, restaurants and the government to confront the UK’s obesity crisis.
