A mother from Perth has revealed how drinking one too many Bloody Marys during the coronavirus lockdown prompted her to launch her own vodka infused with hot sauce – and her business idea is on track to make millions.
Former TV journalist Renae Bunster said that as soon as Western Australia went into lockdown and her kids were at home instead of school, she started researching how she could make a vodka infused with hot sauce to add to tomato juice for Bloody Marys.
Renae is already the brains behind the $1 million-a-year Bunsters Hot Sauce empire – known for its cheeky Sh*t the Bed Hot Sauce – and so she began by experimenting with her own products.

‘When I was stuck on lockdown and I was home-schooling my kids I was drinking quite a few Bloody Marys and the vodka got me thinking one day how can I make these drinks even faster?’ Renae told FEMAIL.
‘After researching, I came up with the idea to put the Sh*t the Bed into the vodka.’
While Renae’s idea seems simple, the mum admitted that making the vodka wasn’t as easy as just ‘pouring the hot sauce into the vodka’.
‘I actually got all of the ingredients, all of the fruit and the veggies and the things that are in the hot sauce, and seeped them into the vodka,’ she said.

Renae said she enlisted the help of some mixologists and professionals to make sure it ‘tastes really good’, including Alchemy Distillers in the Yarra Valley in Victoria.
The result is a small batch premium vodka for $70 that has been infused with all of the natural, fresh ingredients that has made Sh*t the Bed such a global hit.
All you need to do is add it to tomato juice to make the perfect Bloody Mary, and Renae even said she thinks she has made the ‘best chilli vodka in the world’.

The mum said she hopes that the launch of the vodka will mean big things for her business, which already sold 30,000 kilograms of hot sauce last year and is the number one selling hot sauce on Amazon USA.
An equity raise is underway for the vodka, with close to $1million raised in under a week.
‘I can’t believe we’ve raised $1million dollars during COVID-19 too,’ Renae said.
‘Everyone wants a bit of the alcohol industry. George Clooney sold his tequila company for a billion dollars.
‘I don’t think I’m quite there yet, but the stakes really do get raised once alcohol is involved in a company. I don’t know if I’ll be making a tequila anytime soon so I don’t think George Clooney has anything to worry about.
‘But the beauty of this is because I’ve created this brand and this flavour I can do licensing deals with a tequila company or a rum company or whiskey or beer.’

Renae Bunster became famous in 2016 for her Sh*t The Bed hot sauce after a wildly successful crowd-funding campaign.
She said she owes the success of her business to the sauce’s memorable name, which tourist Robert Mackereth agreed with, sharing it to his social media.
Within hours of posting a picture of the sauce to his Facebook page, Mackereth had bought about more than $13,000 worth of sales for the Perth mum.
His post was shared more than 72,000 times under the caption: ‘Australia you never fail to amaze me! Best sauce name ever!’
A week after the post went up the sauce had moved to number one on Amazon USA’s best selling hot sauce’s list causing a massive global surge in sales.
Bunsters Hot Sauce made more than $2million last financial year.

There are also other versions which are slightly less hot, and the sauce has proven especially popular in the US, where it has even been featured on the US celebrity chat show, Hot Ones.
