A young mother who admitted to tying a cord around her seven-month-old baby’s neck and stuffing socks in his mouth before she sent the disturbing footage and photos to her ex has avoided jail time.

Holly Anne Maxwell, 27, admitted to filming various assaults on her infant son to ’emotionally manipulate’ the boy’s father following the couple’s split in late 2022.

The former nurse was sentenced to an 18-month intensive supervision order on Wednesday after she previously pleaded guilty to four charges in Perth Magistrates Court.

Maxwell has also been ordered to engage in the relevant services from parental lessons to anger management and drug rehabilitation programs.

Magistrate Robert Young described her actions as ‘inherently dangerous’.

‘The worst thing any parent can do is use their child as a weapon,’ Magistrate Robert Young said.

Maxwell flipped her middle finger and poked her tongue out at media crews as she left court.

In his sentencing, the Magistrate said he did not want to minimise the mother’s suffering from post-natal depression, ABC News reported.

Maxwell fell pregnant four months after starting a relationship with the father, with the pair moving in together not long after.

The 27-year-old had felt ‘trapped’ while in the relationship, her lawyer Margot Perling told the court.

The lawyer added Maxwell had been struggling as a new mum and had been crying out for help.

In footage sent to the baby’s father and his mother, Maxwell could be heard screaming ‘I’m going to f****** flog this c***, I’m going to kill this c***’, and ‘he’s going to get hurt’.

Another video showed the baby crying in the back of a car while Maxwell screamed that she could not ‘stand being stuck alone with this c***’.

A photo of her hand around the baby’s neck sent to her ex-partner was  accompanied with the message: ‘I’ll f***ing hurt him so bad to f*** with your feelings like you have mine. Don’t think I won’t.’

The court heard that Maxwell split from the baby's father in late 2022 and that the 'graphic' photos and videos were used as a way to 'emotionally manipulate' and scare him

Prosecutors previously told the court that the videos were so graphic that police had ‘protected’ staff from viewing them.

The child was taken to Perth Children’s Hospital but sustained no lasting injuries and is now in the care of his maternal grandmother.

Maxwell  pleaded three counts of assault and one count of impeding another person’s normal breathing.

Maxwell now sees her son three times a week and is doing ‘everything to get him back’.
