Stephen Colbert will be taking the remainder of the week off from hosting The Late Show on CBS as he continues his recovery from a bout of COVID-19.

The 59-year-old talk show host took to Twitter on Wednesday with a message for his fans informing them of his expected absence.

‘Sorry to say, per doctor’s orders, I’m going to be out for the rest of the week,’ the Washington, D.C. native said. ‘Resting up so that I can deliver the hand crafted, artisanal talk show that we so enjoy serving you.’

Colbert shared an image of a wooden box containing socks, onions and a greeting card that he said his fellow late night host Jimmy Fallon had sent him amid his health issue.

‘In the meantime, a heady blend of Paxlovid and onions in my socks (thank you, Fallon) will be rebuilding my immune system,’ he said.

Colbert’s sidelining comes after the show initially decided to forge on with the host working from home this week after he tested positive for coronavirus.

A social media post from the series on Monday read: ‘MEANWHILE… The Late Show will look a little bit different tonight because Stephen is At Home with Covid (he’s ok!), but be sure to tune in as the show will go on remotely with Monologue, Meanwhile, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Ricky Velez. #whatyearisit?’

Colbert on Monday’s broadcast interviewed Jada Pinkett-Smith, who was at the side of estranged husband Will Smith when he infamously slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards, after Rock made a joke at her expense.

‘I was really looking forward to meeting Jada Pinkett Smith tonight,’ Colbert joked on Monday’s episode. ‘The only upside is that no one can slap me for having her name in my mouth.’

After soldiering through on Monday episode, Colbert said on Tuesday in a message posted on the show’s account that he’d decided to focus on his recovery for the foreseeable future.

‘I always want to be able to do the show the audience deserves, but today Covid had other plans,’ he said. ‘Taking it day by day and I hope we can all see each other tomorrow night.’

Other celebrities who were slated to appear on this week’s editions of The Late Show included Keegan-Michael Key, the Talking Heads, Jon Batiste and Rachel Maddow.

It’s not Colbert’s first time having to cancel shows due to the virus, as he had to do so in April and May of 2022.

At the time, the late night host – who has been criticized by podcaster Joe Rogan over his advocacy for vaccinations – took to social media to acknowledge his forthcoming absence.

He tweeted: ‘Yep! I tested positive for Covid, but basically I’m feeling fine- grateful to be vaxxed and boosted. Thank you for the well wishes. This just proves that I will do anything to avoid interviewing Jason Bateman.’

In May of 2022, the show announced that Colbert had been ‘experiencing symptoms consistent with a recurrence of COVID,’ causing production to show down amid his ailment.

‘Out of an abundance of caution for his staff, guests, and audience, he will be isolating for a few additional days,’ the show said in a social media post.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert can be seen weeknights on CBS at 11:35/10:35c.
