HBO host Bill Maher couldn’t resist taking jabs at President Joe Biden on his latest show, even as he praised the Democrat for his strong show of support for Israel in its war with Hamas.

‘Joe Biden, our president, went to Israel this week — nothing to do with the war, he just wanted a break from the tension in DC,’ Maher joked in the opening monologue of Friday’s new episode of Real Time.

‘But think this was his best week as president, Joe Biden. This was his finest hour. And then he gets his a** on a plane, it can’t be easy. He’s not a young man — he remembers when the Dead Sea was alive,’ cracked Maher of the 80-year-old president.

Maher, who has been vocal in backing Israel since Hamas launched its deadly October 7 surprise attack, also took aim at elite US universities, where some student groups downplayed or even justified the massacre that left 1,400 dead.

‘I recognize that a certain amount of foolishness is expected of college kids, but mixing Jägermeister and tomato juice isn’t the same as siding with terrorists,’ said Maher. ‘If ignorance is a disease, Harvard Yard is the Wuhan wet market.’

Maher cited an open letter signed by 34 student groups at Harvard, which said they ‘hold the Israeli regime entirely responsible for all unfolding violence’ following the Hamas attack, citing Israel’s treatment of Palestinians leading up to the massacre.

‘They don’t know much of anything, actually. But it doesn’t deter them from having an opinion. They’ve convinced themselves Israel is the most repressive regime in history because they have no knowledge of history or even a desire to know,’ said Maher.

Biden returned from Israel on Thursday and delivered a rare address to the nation from the Oval Office, asking Congress for more than $100 billion to support Ukraine and Israel in their respective wars with Russia and Hamas.

The Israel-Hamas war, which entered its 15th day on Saturday, is the deadliest of five Gaza wars for both sides.

More than 1,400 people in Israel were killed, most of them civilians murdered in the initial attack when Hamas militants stormed into Israel.

In addition, 203 people including children were believed captured by Hamas during the attack and taken into Gaza, the Israeli military has said.

Hamas on Friday freed two American hostages who had been held in Gaza since the war began.

Natalie Shoshana Raanan, 17, and her mother Judith Tai Raanan, 59, arrived back in Israel late on Friday, the Israeli government confirmed, having left Gaza via an Egyptian-controlled crossing.

The Raanans walked out of Gaza without obvious visible physical injuries, getting out of a car and then being surrounded by ICRC staff wearing vests bearing the red cross. The pair then got into a Red Cross vehicle and drove away.

They are now receiving medical treatment, the governor of Illinois said, without providing details of their condition. The deal to free the pair was brokered by Qatar.

On Saturday, Israeli airstrikes continued to hit southern Gaza, an area filled with civilians who fled there from the north on Israeli instructions.

The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry said that at least 4,132 people have been killed in Gaza and 84 in the occupied West Bank over the past two weeks.

Some 14,000 have been wounded in Gaza and more than 1,400 in the West Bank, the group said.

Meanwhile, aid deliveries began moving into the Gaza Strip from Egypt on Saturday.

A two-truck UN convoy carried over 44,000 bottles of drinking water from the UN children’s agency – a day’s supply for 22,000 people, according to UNICEF.

The agency said it has supplies for up to 250,000 people at the Rafah crossing that can be brought into Gaza in a matter of hours.
