Two Australian men will spend three years behind bars for raping a woman who was coerced by the pair into forcibly having sex.

Craig John Patman, 40, and Justin Taylor, 43, were imprisoned in Vantaa Prison in Helsinki, Finland for sexually assaulting the woman at a hotel room.

The district court heard the woman was forced into having unprotected sex with Patman and Taylor, both separately and together.

The Finnish court heard the men threatened the woman and used violence against her, which left her ‘paralysed’ with fear.

The men met the woman for the first time in Helsinki around midnight on August 6 before they all planned to go to a karaoke bar.

Around 1.50am CCTV footage showed the three individuals entering the hotel room where Patman and Taylor were staying.

The court was told the woman thought the men were going up to their room briefly to put on another pair of shoes while she could use the bathroom.

While she was in the bathroom one of the men tried to remove her shirt and despite her attempts to tell the men to stop, her clothes were stripped off.

Judge Salli Lindstedt said in her judgement the men’s violent actions were used to ‘break the will of the woman’, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

‘The claimant has verbally forbidden Patman from undressing her and tried to prevent the removal of her clothes, but Patman has forced the claimant to undress,’ the judgement said.

‘During the act, the defendants have pulled the person concerned by the hair.’

The judgement also described Patman and Taylor holding the woman by her wrist and calling her names using derogatory language.

The woman, whose identity was suppressed by the court for her protection, left the hotel room around 3am that morning.

She told a hotel employee she had been raped before staff spoke with her boyfriend on the phone.

The incident was reported to police who later arrived at the hotel and arrested Patman and Taylor who were asleep in the hotel room.

Patman later denied working with Taylor and using force against the woman, and told authorities the sexual acts were consensual.

Taylor said the woman had allegedly given consent verbally and through physical gestures.

Patman was sentenced to three years and eight months behind bars and Taylor was sentenced to three years and two months.

The pair were ordered to pay 8300 Euros [$14,000 AUS] to the victim as compensation. The men are set to appeal their sentence.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Consular State of Play report, the federal government has provided consular assistance to 330 cases that saw Australians imprisoned in an overseas country during 2021-22.

There were 347 cases the previous year which involved consular assistance.
