Are you looking for a seriously inexpensive new skincare hack? Well, if you’re daring, you might consider trying out one 43-year-old’s very controversial – yet thrifty – beauty trick.

Canadian influencer Orim Bright, 22, who has 1.2 million followers, took to TikTok to reveal that her mother uses alcohol wipes nightly to clear her face, chest, and back of grime.

The social media star captioned the video, ‘I do NOT do this but it somehow works SO WELL for my mom, she wanted to share.’

But one viewer claimed the unusual product choice made them ‘squirm’ and FEMAIL has since spoken to a dermatologist to find out if the skincare secret is really worth trying.

Orim, who shares vegan recipes and DIY beauty hacks, hashtagged the shocking video ‘skincare?’ and ‘affordable.’

‘Okay, so I’m gonna show you my skincare secret that is deeply frowned upon that I’ve been doing for basically my whole life,’ Orim’s mom explained, adding that she was almost 44.

‘I have been cleaning my face every night with rubbing alcohol, like 70 per cent rubbing alcohol,’ she admitted, while Orim laughed in the background.

‘So I just rub my face with rubbing alcohol, she said while showing off her process and noting she does it where she ‘feels those little pimples coming in.’

She also puts it on her chest and back, leaving the pad black with dirt.

Before the mom goes to bed, she puts avocado oil on her face. ‘It’s really cheap, too!’ the unlikely influencer proclaimed.

The video has so far received more than 700,000 views, and many followers were shocked by her pared down beauty routine.

‘The way my sensitive skin would simple burst into flames,’ one appalled person commented, as Orim agreed, ‘It would dry my skin out so fast.’

Another person wrote, ‘I’m a licensed esthetician and this is making me squirm. She’s beautiful – but ahhh!!! I hope others don’t start doing this.’

But not everyone was surprised by the unexpected skincare secret, and some were even fans.

‘I mean her skin looks good so whatever works,’ a commenter proclaimed, about the 43-year-old’s youthful visage.

Orim agreed, ‘Her skin is better than mine! It’s ALWAYS clear! Also she never has dark circles I’m so jealous.’

Some even used the alcohol pads themselves, with one writing, ‘I’ve been using rubbing alcohol on my face every day since I was a teenager… followed by moisturizer, always. It’s an astringent,’ and another concurring, ‘I ALWAYS use rubbing alcohol!!! Kills the bacteria/oil and tightens up the skin!’

‘I used rubbing alcohol growing up and I had fantastic skin all thru high school and now I don’t do that and have acne so maybe she’s onto something,’ another wrote.

‘I use rubbing alcohol on my face since I was a teen. I’m almost 55. I also use castor oil on my face /neck and Vaseline cream on body. Work? I think!’ one comment read.

Another woman said, ‘My mom’s been doing that for years with the alcohol! Is always asked if she’s my sister she’s 53!!’

And others swore by a similar process with different ingredients.

One woman revealed, ‘I do this but with glycolic acid! I’m not even sure if it’s good for your skin or not but it has made an insane difference in my texture and acne.’

Another commenter even shared a conspiracy theory: ‘Check your liver health! I know someone who put it on her feet for years and her skin absorbed it. Doc said her liver was like a heavy drinkers.’

Dr. Kiran Mian, a board-certified medical and aesthetic dermatologist at Hudson Dermatology and Laser Surgery in New York City, told FEMAIL that the alcohol pads aren’t the only problem with this unique skincare regimen.

‘Avocado oil tends to have a higher comedogenic rating, which means if you’re acne prone, it may contribute to congestion and clogging your pores,’ Dr. Mian advised.

‘Its fatty acid profile contains higher amounts of oleic acid, along with palmitic and linoleic,’ Dr. Mian continued. ‘Oleic acid can contribute to inflammation in acne, however, is great for maintaining the skin barrier.’

‘Maybe that’s why this woman’s regimen works for her,’ Dr. Mian mused.

‘That being said, I would not recommend it for my patients as most will not benefit from this.’

‘We have so many amazing facial cleaners and moisturizers to choose from!’ Dr. Mian explained.

Dr. Margarita Lolis, MD, a board-certified, New Jersey-based dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, agreed that this beauty routine is quite questionable.

‘It is definitely not okay to use rubbing alcohol on your face- many dermatologists would even say it’s sacrilegious,’ Dr. Lolis joked to DailyMail.com. ‘We even tell patients to avoid using any products including toners that are alcohol based.’

Dr. Lolis said it’s because rubbing alcohol is ‘very irritating and drying because it strips away the natural oils on your face.’

It’s not just drying – it can worsen acne.

‘Prolonged use weakens the skin microbiome and barrier, making you more vulnerable to environmental damage as well as causing an imbalance of the flora on your skin,’ Dr. Lolis advised.
