A man accused of attempted murder at the highest pub in Britain has appeared before a court.

Richard Bowser, 46, allegedly attacked a man in his 40s at the Tan Hill Inn as revellers attended a glam rock concert on Friday evening.

Bowser was arrested at the venue, which lies on the Pennine Way in one of the remotest parts of the Yorkshire Dales and provides bed and breakfast as well as bar facilities.

He was quizzed by detectives over the weekend and was charged with attempted murder as well as firearms offences, causing actual bodily harm and battery.

Bowser, of County Durham, did not enter a plea during a hearing today at York Magistrates’ Court.

Police said they were called to the pub – which is 1,732ft above sea level – by ambulance crews at around 10.40pm on Friday night.

The victim was rushed to hospital with serious wounds to his arm. However, a North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A woman also arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm has been released on police bail while officers make further inquiries.

Police said a number of people were at the pub at the time of the attack and they have asked anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information to contact the force.

A post on the pub’s Facebook page promoted a gig on Friday night by a 70s glam rock band, which was scheduled to start at 9pm. Pubgoers were encouraged to wear fancy dress.

Punters were forced to sleep in makeshift beds on the floor of the 400-year-old pub – which was 10 miles from the nearest main road –  for three days until the snow cleared.

Pub owner Mike Kenny said: ‘We recommended anyone in the pub to stay out rather than endanger life on the snow covered moors. No one is going anywhere yet. The police advised we all stay out for now. Our snowplough is snowed in!’
