A prisoner who used bedsheets to escape from the fifth floor of a New York City hospital was finally caught on Tuesday sleeping on a friend’s couch after a month on the run.

Yenchun Chen, a 44-year-old man who stands 6ft3 and weighs 250lb, made a daring escape from Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital on August 9 by tying bedsheets together and rappelling out a fifth-floor window.

He was supposed to be taking a shower after convincing prison guards to take him for treatment for chest pains.

After rappelling out of hospital, he hitched a ride to New Jersey in a yellow taxi then vanished.

He could barely talk when being found asleep on a friend’s couch at a second-floor apartment on 45th Avenue in Flushing, Queens, on Tuesday morning, located just half a mile from his own address in Long Island City.

It’s unclear what led police to him, but he was so badly injured when they came across him that he begged to be taken back to the hospital.

He is said to have suffered bruising to his ribs in the fall on August 9.

Chen, was arrested on July 31 for criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was awaiting his court date that was set for later in the month, a report said.

The man was tracked to New Jersey the next day following his escape. He also went to Virginia, where he has family and friends, and then back to Queens, where he was recently couch-surfing at different friends’ houses, authorities told ABC News.

Chen was in Department of Corrections custody inside of Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center, located at 281 First Avenue, when he broke free around 4:30pm on August 9.

The hulking prisoner had been at the hospital since Friday after experiencing cardiac issues.

Chen was supposedly taking a shower when he made a run for it by tying bedsheets together and rappelling out a fifth floor window.

When correction officers went to check on him they found the bathroom window open and saw Chen was gone.

One of the nurses told WABC 7 that she was ‘shocked’ when she heard a prisoner escaped through a window.’
