Doctor Doctor will be returning to screens.

The Channel Nine medical drama starring Rodger Corser as Dr Hugh Knight will be returning to screens has been renewed for a fifth season.

Nine’s head of drama Andy Ryan told TV Tonight: ‘We are thrilled to commission a fifth season of Australia’s favourite drama series.’

‘With its stellar cast and beautiful rural setting, viewers of all ages have fallen in love with the misadventures of Dr Hugh Knight… We are really proud to be able to support the creative team behind Doctor Doctor for another season.’

Doctor Doctor is so far the only Australian television series to be renewed amid the coronavirus pandemic, which forced other shows to halt production.

Easy Tiger Productions, which has produced the previous seasons of Doctor Doctor, has yet to announce filming dates.

In the meantime, the current season will resume on April 22.

Doctor Doctor was forced into a mid-season hiatus to accommodate Nine News’ special COVID-19 broadcasts.

The series will pick up after Dr Knight became a single parent, which derailed his plans to move back to Sydney.

For the last 12 months, the heart surgeon has put his love life on the back-burner to focus on being a good father to his daughter, Eliza.

But the arrival of new medical intern Tara, played by Wentworth star Kate Jenkinson, could threaten to lead him astray. 

Season four also stars Nicole da Silva, Ryan Johnson, Tina Bursill, Matt Castley, Chloe Bayliss, Belinda Bromilow, Charles Wu and Miranda Tapsell.
