A drunk headmistress who ploughed into two cars as she drove to school has been banned from the road for two years.

Boozed up Lorraine Bradley, 57, was almost four times the drink-drive limit at 7.35am when she got behind the wheel of her grey mini to go to work.

A court heard single Bradley has now been sacked from her job as principal of The Rodillian Academy, in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

The crash left another driver with head and chest injuries and Bradley, of Oulton, required hospital treatment in Leeds General Infirmary immediately after the smash.

Leeds Magistrates’ Court heard Bradley had blown 133 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath on the police roadside breathalyser – the legal limit is 35.

Prosecutor Megan King told the court that Bradley blew 107 at hospital, which was the figure the head was prosecuted on.

Bradley told police she had downed alcohol the previous night at a ‘drinks and nibbles’ soiree with a friend to celebrate the end of the half term.

She claimed that she was unaware that she was over the limit the following morning when driving her Mini to school on 20 October last year.

The crash caused one car to plough through a garden wall in Oulton Road, Leeds.

Miss King said that after first hitting the parked car Bradley then crashed into a stationary Ford Fiesta, the driver of which sustained head and chest injuries.

There was no statement from that driver.

A probation officer told the court that Bradley feels ‘shame and regret’ for her actions.

The court heard the headmistress had been drinking up to 9.30pm the night before and she had got up at 5am because it was the end of term and she was preparing to address the staff team.

She had also been packing to go on holiday the following day, a Saturday.

Bradley said the road conditions were dark and wet as she drove to school and she is ‘horrified’ by what happened in crashing into the two cars.

The probation officer said Bradley confessed to drinking more than usual and didn’t realise she was not fit to drive.

It was ‘a disaster of her own making’, she admitted.

She admitted that she drinks on a regular basis, but is not addicted to alcohol.

The court heard she was in a ‘high pressure lifestyle’ as a principal.

The Rodillian Academy is a mixed school and sixth form with 1,647 pupils.

At its last Ofsted inspection the school was judged overall as ‘good’ but was seen as ‘outstanding’ in leadership and management.

Mitigating John Wilkinson said: ‘It is quite clear that success comes with a cost for many professionals.

‘She will have to live with the result of her actions on that day.

‘The stress and anxiety of the profession is obvious and she doesn’t hide from that.

‘She has lost her career and suffered humiliation.’

The court heard Bradley was not even allowed back into school to clear her desk after she was sacked.

Bradley had pleaded guilty to driving over the prescribed limit at the first opportunity .

District Judge Timothy Capstick, disqualified her from driving for two years. He also fined her £1,000 and ordered her to pay £400 surcharge and £85 prosecution costs.

Judge Capstick told Bradley, who has no previous convictions, that her drink driving has had ‘a devastating personal impact on you.’

He said she had consumed a significant amount of alcohol the night before and the crash could have cost of lives of her and the other motorist.

‘This has had a devastating effect on your personal life,’ he added.
