From least to most addicted to tobacco and vaping, the data revealed Sweden is the country with the least addicts to nicotine.

The country most addicted to nicotine is Bulgaria, with around 28 percent of the population smoking every day.

The countries that smoke the most in the EU are Bulgaria (28.2 percent), then Turkey (27.3 percent), Greece (27.2 percent), Hungary (25.8 percent), then Lativa (24.9 percent).

The countries with the fewest smokers are Sweden (9.3 per cent), Iceland (11.2 per cent), Finland (12.5 per cent), Norway (12.9 per cent) and Luxembourg (13.5 per cent).

Around Europe, men are more likely than women to smoke – 22.3 percent of men aged 15 years old and over are daily cigarette smokers, compared with 14.8 percent of women.

Countries, where men smoke the most, are:

  • Bulgaria (37.6 per cent)
  • Latvia (34.4 per cent)
  • Romania (30.6 per cent).

Countries where women smoke the most:

  • Germany (18.6 per cent)
  • Croatia (19.2 per cent)
  • Bulgaria (20.7 per cent).

Figures suggest that across the EU, the vast majority of daily smokers in 2019 (76.2 per cent) had been smoking for at least 10 years.

As for electronic cigarettes (also known as vapes), Eurostat reported the nations that vape the most among EU member states include France (6.6 per cent), Poland (6.0 per cent) and the Netherlands (5.9 per cent).

The countries that vape the least are Turkey (0.9 percent) and Spain (1.0 percent).

Eurostat is expected to publish its next report on figures on cigarette consumption in 2027.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), tobacco is the biggest health threat in the world, killing more than eight million people yearly.

While the UK is no longer included in the Eurostat data, Action On Smoking And Health (ASH) reported: “There are about 6.9 million adult cigarette smokers in the United Kingdom.”

As with other European countries, men are more likely to smoke than women in the UK.

Overall the trend for smoking, however, has declined since the 1970s, but has seemingly plateaued.

Since 2021 the proportion of current vaping has been greater than that of current smoking (7.6 percent compared to 3.6 percent in 2023).

And the proportion of never smokers who have tried vaping is 11.5 percent.
