Meta has suspended Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s Instagram accounts for ‘repeated violations’ of its ‘dangerous organizations and individuals policy’ after he made repeated calls to ‘wipe Israel off the map’.

Both Khamenei’s Persian and English language accounts – which had more than 5.1 million and 204,000 followers respectively – were removed on Thursday following pressure from pro-Israel groups.

‘We have removed these accounts for repeatedly violating our Dangerous Organizations & Individuals policy,’ a Meta spokesperson told Middle East Eye following the accounts’ removal.

The Iranian leader, who is also the longest-serving head of state in the Middle East, has been accused of praising the horrific October 7 attack by Palestinian terror group Hamas which left around 1,200 people dead.

‘Never doubt that the hostile, usurper Zionist regime will be wiped off the world’s map one day. God willing, this is a definite part of the future. We hope you, the youth, will see this with your own eyes,’ the leader wrote.

Although both Iran and the US have said the Islamic Republic was not involved in the October 7 massacre, Iran has been one of the fiercest critics of Israel in the aftermath, as Benjamin Netanyahu killed around 27,000 Gazans amid airstrikes.

Khamenei has also publicly supported attacks on shipping in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
