Lionel Richie apologized for canceling a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden in New York City during his makeup performance on Monday.

The 74-year-old hitmaker was originally set to perform at the world-renowned venue on Saturday night before he was unexpectedly forced to postpone the concert just an hour before it was supposed to begin.

The singer, who recently shared his secret for maintaining a youthful appearance, went on to return to Madison Square Garden and issued a heartfelt apology for the unfortunate cancelation.

Richie began by stating via People that he had tried to convince his plane’s pilot to make it to Saturday’s planned performance after he was informed that there was a chance that he would not make it.

‘I had two no’s to come at the same time, and when those two decided it’s a no — when God says no and when the pilot says no, the answer…I tried to bribe the pilot,’ he said.

The All Night Long singer then explained that he was persuaded to turn around when his pilot made a personal appeal.

‘The pilot said, “I do want to see my wife tomorrow.” So tonight we are going to make up for that,’ he stated.

Richie added that he wanted to apologize ‘a thousand times’ for missing the show.

The performer previously issued an apology via his X account to explain why he had to cancel his concert.

He wrote: ‘Due to severe weather and being unable to land in the NY and surrounding areas, I’m unable to make it to the show tonight.’

The hitmaker then expressed that he was particularly disheartened to have to postpone the concert and added that he was excited to see his fans at a later date.

‘I’m so bummed. We are rescheduling the show to Monday Aug 14,’ he explained.

The Endless Love singer added that he could not ‘wait to perform for you all.’
