One of the best ways to get the help you need is to get any niggling warning signs checked over by a doctor. Some symptoms of cancer, however, could go under the radar. During the night, if you experience a feeling of tenderness in the legs or upper arms, it could be bone cancer. The NHS notes bone pain would be present “at night” and “when resting”, which “can sometimes be wrongly mistaken for arthritis in adults”.

Bone cancer tends to develop in the long bones of the legs or upper arms, the health body explained.

However, any bone can be affected; aside from tenderness, the area surrounding the affected area could be swollen and red.

If the affected bone is near a joint, such as the knee, it could make walking difficult, and a limp may develop.

A lump could even develop around the affected bone; weakened, the bone could fracture more easily after a minor injury or fall.

Less common warning signs of bone cancer include: a high temperature, unexplained weight loss, and sweating at night.

If any bone pain is “persistent, severe or worsening”, contact your doctor.

An X-ray can be arranged by a medical professional to check the underlying cause of bone pain.

“If the X-ray shows abnormal areas, you’ll be referred to an orthopaedic surgeon,” the NHS states.

DON’T MISS

While stage three bone cancer can be more difficult to cure, treatment can relieve symptoms and help to slow the spread of cancer.

The Bone Cancer Research Trust offers more information, support, and guidance about the disease.

As there are different types of bone cancer, such as osteosarcoma or chordoma, the charity details each one in detail.

Information includes the number of cases in the UK, symptoms, and specific treatments.
