Brewers shortstop Willy Adames left Friday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants after getting hit by a foul ball from teammate Brian Anderson while watching from the dugout.

Anderson was batting in the bottom of the second inning when he hit a line drive that struck Adames.

The game was stopped for a few minutes to allow Milwaukee’s training staff to check on Adames as he sat on the bench. Anderson looked concerned as he waited from near the batter’s box.

Adames eventually walked out of the dugout and headed toward the clubhouse. The Brewers said he was taken for a scan and left the ballpark to get additional tests and evaluation.

Brice Turang replaced Adames at shortstop in the top of the third.

‘He was taken to hospital. He was alert and responsive the whole time,’ manager Craig Counsell said about Adames in his post-game comments after Milwaukee suffered its second biggest loss of the season, 15-1.

‘No fractures. They will keep him at the hospital tonight, just for monitoring purposes and we anticipate him being released tomorrow morning.’

Asked if Adames coming out of the freak incident relatively uninjured was the ‘best outcome’ for the team, Counsell replied: ‘Yes, he was alert and responsive as he left and we got pretty good news at the hospital too. So, obviously he’s in pain but I think overall…no bad news considering how scary it was.

Counsel added that he ‘heard’ the ball hit ‘somebody’ as soon as the ball flew into the Brewers dugout.

‘I didn’t know who it hit but I knew it hit somebody. Willy didn’t really react that much initially. He just went ahead and sat down. And then what happened.

‘It was really scary.’

The Brewers are now expected to place Adames on the team’s concussion injury list (IL) for at least the next week, according to reports.

‘Willy is the catalyst for this team,’ Brewers infielder Mike Brosseau said. ‘What he brings to this team, what he means to this team, to see him go down like that and really not have anybody know the severity of it, it´s pretty scary, pretty frightening.’

Adames’ injury appeared to rattle the Brewers, who committed two errors and allowed seven runs in the top of the third inning as the Giants extended their lead from 3-1 to 10-1.

The Giants have outscored the Brewers 20-1 in the first two meetings of this four-game series. Brian Haniger went 3 of 5 with a two-run homer and a two-run double. Patrick Bailey went 4 of 5 with three RBIs. J.D. Davis went 3 of 6 with three runs and three RBIs, including a two-run homer.

Brett Wisely hit a three-run homer and went 2 for 5. Mike Yastrzemski was 3 of 5 and scored two runs. Michael Conforto scored three runs.

Friday’s win was the ninth in 11 games for San Francisco (26-25). The Giants are now above .500 for the first time this season.
