Shingles is a painful condition caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. The condition weakens a person’s immune system, with a lowered immune system further spreading of the virus may occur. The right kinds of food are notorious when it comes to helping prevent the spread. Question is, what are best?

The shingles virus can last between two and six weeks. Shingles isn’t life-threatening, but some people experience postherpetic neuralgia.

This is when nerve fibres become damaged, causing shingles pain that lasts for weeks or months after the rash clears.

There’s no cure for shingles, but your doctor can prescribe antiviral medication to help shorten the duration of the virus and reduce symptoms.

Eating the right kinds of food has been shown to help reduce symptoms and promote healing.

When a person suffers with shingles their immune system becomes compromised.

Studies have shown that certain changes to your diet can help to strengthen the immune system thereby preventing shingles from spreading to other parts of the body.

This is why medical professionals strongly recommend eating and avoiding certain foods to boost immunity strength.

These may include foods which are rich in vitamins A, B12, C and E.

Most cases of shingles last three to five weeks, said the National Institute on Ageing.

The health site added: “The first sign is often burning or tingling pain; sometimes it includes numbness or itching on one side of the body.

“Somewhere between one and five days after the tingling or burning feeling on the skin, a red rash will appear.”
