In a study published in the National Library of Health, statin use and alcohol consumption with its associated effects were further analysed.

“Statins constitute the most commonly prescribed drugs to decrease cholesterol and are an important modulator of alcohol-induced cerebral artery constriction,” began the study.

Research was done on rats on a high cholesterol diet to determine whether atorvastatin administration modified cerebral artery constriction.

The study found that atorvastatin worsened symptoms of alcohol-induced cerebral artery constriction in rats.

It further concluded that statin therapy exacerbates alcohol-induced constriction of cerebral arteries.
