Delta Goodrem is a beloved Australian singer with fans around the world.

But the star admits that at one point her career appeared to be on a bigger trajectory than it eventually took after she was waylaid by a devastating cancer diagnosis.

The 38-year-old tells this week’s issue of Stellar Magazine that she’s ‘proud’ of her career but has to ‘accept what she can’t control’.

‘I think of my story: for a moment, it looked like it would take the course of those before me – and those after me’ the Innocent Eyes singer said.

‘I was signed to a music label young, I joined a fabulous TV series [Neighbours], and I had hits around the world’ Delta went on.

‘But my story wasn’t meant to take the trajectory many thought it would.

‘Mine was my own, and happening in its own time, and I think that’s been a huge lesson for me to accept’.

In 2003, Delta was paving an impressive music career for herself, reaching number one in Australia with several hits from her blockbuster debut album Innocent Eyes.

However, that same year she was devastatingly diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Previously appearing on Today Extra, she said: ‘It was incredibly extreme, to start your dreams coming true and you’re flying to the US and doing top of the pops, and flying back to Australia and living a moment of working hard and loving it, it was always my passion.

‘But, the trajectory changed. I think when I look at it now and the fact that we have been able to start the Delta Goodrem Foundation that it’s just been a part of a journey, that’s my story.’

Speaking about her diagnosis, Delta continued: ‘I was number one and got diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

‘That’s life, you can’t control these things you just have to do the best you can and making good with what comes your way.

‘That’s what was a part of my life and I’ve been able to not have a wall between me and people who are having a fight and hopefully now we are making a big difference with the foundation, we have done some incredible things we’ve done the past few years and we have much more that we intend to do.’

Delta lost her hair due to chemotherapy and said the changes to her physical appearance were ‘confronting’.

She went through a year of cancer treatment that included eight months of chemotherapy and two months of radiotherapy.

After beating cancer, Delta said that her health remains her priority.
