A 22st (308lbs) mum-of-three who wore a size 26 (US size 22) has revealed how she shed half her body weight after getting divorced.

Carly Fisher, 41, from Llanelli, south Wales, now tips the scales at a healthy 9st 12lb (138lbs) and wears a size six (US size 2), after deciding to shed the pounds ahead of her 40th birthday last year.

The hospital switchboard operator, watched her weight creep up with each of her three pregnancies.

But after losing two stone from stress during her divorce, the mum to Ebon, 12, Erin, nine, and Ellis, five, decided to keep going with her weigh loss and signed up to a diet and fitness plan in January 2019.

Now only 9st 12lb and wearing a dress size 6, she has a healthy BMI of 23.5 and is considering getting her personal trainer licence

But she gave up shortly after before trying again a few months after.

‘I started trying again at the beginning of March,’ Carly said, ‘but by the middle of the month my marriage ended and I lost two stone in a few weeks through stress.’

‘At the end of the month, by then living on my own with my kids, something clicked. I was determined to tackle my weight head on and I have never looked back.’

At her 22st heaviest, 5ft 4in Carly had a body mass index of 52.5, compared to the NHS healthy range of 18.5 to 24.9, making her morbidly obese.

Now a slimline 9st 12lb and wearing a dress size 6, she has a healthy BMI of 23.5.

Saying she said had always dreaded being really overweight at 40, Carly revealed she ‘didn’t really have a target weight in my head.’

‘At 22st I was a size 26, but I did have a very big bust and still have.

‘I thought I needed to lose five of six stone, not the 12st I’ve ended up losing.

‘But, when I’d already lost six stone by August 2019, I just kept on going.’

By the beginning of 2020, Carly had lost 8st and by November she was 11st lighter.

In March 2021 she weighed a slimline 9st 12lb – a staggering 12st 2lb less than she had been at her heaviest.

‘I have just been maintaining my weight ever since,’ she said.’

‘I had followed a diet plan, with supplements to take alongside the calorie counting, but the gym had been good for toning my body and also for my head – as it really helped me to take my mind off things.’

‘I started working out properly in January 2020, although I could only do it at home during the lockdowns.’

‘But, using a combined diet and fitness programme, I changed the way I looked at food.’

‘It was a lifestyle change for me and not just a weight loss diet.’

A lot of people wanting to lose weight ask Carly for advice, as they know she's been big. 'I think it puts people at ease and I feel I could really help people,' she says. Pictured here before her weight loss

As well as cutting portion sizes, Carly started eating less processed carbohydrates and more roughage and vegetables, to fill herself up without consuming excess calories.

‘I have a much better relationship with food now,’ she said.

‘My kids are so proud of me, I’m even thinking of taking some personal training qualifications.’

‘I find a lot of people wanting to lose weight ask me for advice, as they know I have been big. I think it puts people at ease and I feel I could really help people.’

‘They know I’ve been really overweight, so they are prepared to listen to me when I give advice on diet and exercise, as they know I cracked it.’

‘People who struggle with confidence are happy to speak to me, too, as they know I won’t pass judgement as I’ve been there.’

Working shifts in a busy hospital played havoc with Carly’s diet when she was overweight and, rather than eating balanced meals, she would skip mealtimes, snack and then eat massive portions when she finally found time to sit down.

‘I wouldn’t eat breakfast and I wouldn’t eat lunch.’ said Carly.

‘I’d snack during the day on things like crisps and chocolate, then I’d have a big meal in the evening.

‘It would be twice the portion size that I needed.

‘The shift work messed up my body clock so I wasn’t eating at normal times.

‘I’d eat stuff like spaghetti Bolognese or chilli. It was the amount I ate, rather than what I ate at night that was really at fault.

‘Now, because I am eating smaller, more regular amounts and less carbs, my metabolism is better, too.’

‘As I’m thinking about meals and planning more, I don’t feel I have to restrict my carbs completely now, though.’

‘Before I lost weight, I’d eat at the wrong times and do things like tuck into a sausage sandwich at 11pm or even midnight, if I’d worked a shift and been up watching a film.’

‘Now, I’m much more in control of my diet, so that doesn’t happen.’

Still not a fan of breakfast, Carly tends just to have a Weetabix, or a low calorie cereal bar.

And if she is going to the gym, she will have some kind of shake, so she is not exercising on an empty stomach.

Then she might have a chicken salad, or grilled sausages and salad for lunch.

And for dinner she might still have spaghetti Bolognese as she used to, but made with lean meat and maybe courgette spirals instead of pasta, adding a yogurt for pudding.

‘I might even have a bit of chocolate if I fancy it, as I won’t have snacked and overeaten throughout the day,’ she said.

Despite looking amazing now, Carly is yet to start seriously dating again.

‘My husband and I are separated and not yet divorced, although that will be happening.’

‘Since we split up, I’ve had a couple of dates, but I’ve really been concentrating on my kids.’

‘Don’t get me wrong, if somebody came along and they were right for me, I’d be happy to start seeing them, as I feel much more confident than I did when I was overweight, but I’m not actively looking.’
