Pep Guardiola expects Manchester City to respect Sir Bobby Charlton‘s passing impeccably on Sunday as the club wrote to fans warning of stadium bans for inappropriate behaviour.

The Premier League champions suspended two young fans this week after they were filmed mocking Charlton’s death on the concourse at the Etihad Stadium.

Mail Sport understands that City reminded those travelling to Old Trafford for the derby clash with Manchester United of their responsibility to ‘respect the badge’ in an email on Friday.

City regularly send travel guides to supporters but this included a specific section of the planned minute’s applause for Charlton, who died last weekend at the age of 86.

‘Please note, we condemn all inappropriate or abusive behaviour,’ the letter read.

The Manchester United and England icon sadly passed away on Saturday, aged 86

‘Anyone found to be behaving in such a manner will be issued with a stadium ban, and Greater Manchester Police will be made aware of their behaviour meaning they may also be subject to an arrest.’

The two banned fans, both minors, are facing a police probe following the clip that was posted to social media platform TikTok.

‘They don’t represent us,’ Guardiola said. ‘The alcohol does bad things to people. What represents us is Mike Summerbee going to Old Trafford (on Thursday) to sign the book on behalf of Man City.’

United delivered a book of condolence to the City’s base on Friday for club officials – including Guardiola – to pen their own tributes.

‘We have a huge respect for Man United and we prove it when winning and losing over the years,’ Guardiola added. ‘We have a lot of respect, especially for the icon Sir Bobby Charlton.

‘We’ll be part of the condolences for the family, Man United and English football. We will be there. It’s a good rivalry. Each club respects the other. It’s my eighth season here and no big issues (have) happened at matches.’

City fans who hear inappropriate behaviour have been encouraged by the club to report it to a steward or the police.

But there is an expectation that the visiting section will mark the day with the same respect as they did in 2008, when the derby coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster.

Guardiola has won six times at Old Trafford in all competitions during his eight seasons in England and another on Sunday would open up a nine-point gap between the two after just 10 games.

‘When I was at Barcelona and Bayern Munich and I travelled to England to play at Old Trafford and it was always special,’ the City boss added.

‘It’s a special place and here it is special for our fans. But at the end it is just a football game, not like an FA Cup final or one of the last fixtures of the season where winning or losing can define winning the league or not.

‘There are still 87 points to play so it is another game and we have to be focused on what we have to do to beat them.

‘I want to see our mentality on Sunday. We won a lot. It’s not about that, I want to see my team in big scenarios like it is. The right mentality, the right way.’
