Cyril “Sammy” Chung, a well-known Watford F.C. footballer, died on Tuesday, August 30th, at the age of 90. Everyone at Watford FC is devastated to learn of his death. The club announced the news on their official Twitter account.

According to the football club- “The passing of Cyril (Sammy) Chung, 90, has saddened everyone at Watford FC. Sammy Chung was the English game’s first Anglo-Chinese player, and he was only the second Anglo-Chinese player to play in the Premier League. Sammy, rest in peace.”

After completing his national service, Chung, who could play center striker or wing half, joined Reading.

He then made his first professional signing and scored 13 goals for the Royals, which led to a transfer to Norwich City.

Chung’s playing career, though, was most well-known during his time at Watford. He scored 24 goals while playing 242 times for the Hornets in English football’s third and fourth tiers. Sammy reportedly passed away on Sunday at a nursing facility in Shropshire, which his family confirmed.

He joined Watford from Norwich City in 1957 and quickly established himself as an important and versatile squad member, earning Watford their first promotion in 1959-60.

Sammy frequently played left-half with another recently deceased teammate, Vince McNeice. Furthermore, during his eight years with Watford, Chung played a variety of positions, primarily across the half-back line but also in attack on occasion.

Sammy Chung’s time at the club was fruitful. Manager Bill McGarry hired the player as coach in 1962, when he was only 30 years old, demonstrating his versatility on the field and overall understanding of the game. Following Chung’s final league game at Vicarage Road in 1965, the pair forged a stronger manager-trainer bond.

Wolves defeated Manchester City in the UEFA Cup final in 1974, the team’s only previous appearance in a major European final.
