Chamberlin worked with the SCSO for 23 years before declaring his candidacy for sheriff in February 2020. His announcement garnered public attention, and he had expressed his desire to take over the office. However, after being fired from the SCSO and later withdrawing from the race, his plans came to an unexpected end.

He was sacked by former Sheriff Knezovich four days later because he had lied during an investigation.
