A mystery woman found dead on a major road in Western Australia has caused chaos for peak-hour commuters as police shut down roads to piece together how she died.

The woman was found critically injured near the intersection of Wanneroo Road and Nollamara Avenue in Balcatta, Perth, at about 1am on Wednesday.

A group of people saw the woman and were calling police when officers came across the scene.

Police closed part of Wanneroo Road – a 600m stretch between Sylvia St and Morley Dr – while homicide, forensic and major crash detectives investigate.

WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said authorities are trying to determine how the woman ‘came to be there’.

‘It’s very early in the investigation… it’s too early to tell what has happened, but certainly, we’ve got massive resources down there to determine who is involved and what has occurred,’ Mr Blanch said.

Mr Blanch said police are exploring a hit-and-run theory but advised it would be too early to speculate the cause of the woman’s death.

‘Obviously we suspect a vehicle (was involved) but nothing’s off the table at the moment’,’ Mr Blanch said.

‘[However], to speculate at this early stage would be wrong to do.’

Forensic officers and homicide detectives are focusing their attention between Harrison Street and Green Avenue and have set up a marquee, car and forensic van outside a home nearby.

A neighbour told detectives they heard a loud ‘thud’ at around the time of the incident.

‘It was about one o’clock in the morning, and I heard a thud, and I actually thought it was someone putting out the bins and then everything went quiet again,’ the resident told The West Australian.

Another resident, who lives near the scene, said they heard screams and shouts for help.

‘Just crying and just shouting,’ the local said. ‘I just thought it was normal. It’s like any other day but you know (now), sad,’ they told 7News

During the morning peak-hour rush police at every intersection along the stretch of road were stopping cars and pedestrians from entering.

Drivers were re-routed around the investigation zone causing major traffic delays for morning commuters.

Mr Blanch said the disruption was necessary to allow detectives to investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death appropriately.

‘Clearly, it’s very disruptive this morning for road users, but we’ve blocked off the entire road because we’ve got homicide and major crash down there,’ Mr Blanch said.

‘We want to make sure that we find the person responsible, so we are going to do it right, and I know that puts motorists out, but we’ve lost a life here; someone’s lost a family member, so we’re going to do our job properly.’

Police are urging anyone who was in the area between 12.45am and 1.15am and who saw or has CCTV or dashcam footage of vehicles or suspicious persons in the area to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
