  • Sports personalities sent well-wishes to the presenter, 34, after the news

Sky Sports presenter Michelle Owen has announced she is pregnant but is ‘fighting’ for the lives of herself and her baby due to a rare complication.

Owen, who regularly covers the EFL and more for the channel, posted on social media to say she was taken to hospital due to her condition – Hyperemesis gravidarum, which only two per cent of women experience.

Women who suffer from it experience prolonged and severe nausea and vomiting, dehydration and weight loss. The cause of the condition is unknown but there is evidence it runs in the family.

The 34-year-old host has a four-year-old son named Zac with her husband Adam, and she suffered with HG in her first pregnancy.

She hoped her second pregnancy would be easier, but admitted tonight it’s been the ‘worst eight weeks of my life’.

Owen became a Pregnancy Sickness Support Ambassador to help raise awareness for the condition after the birth of her son.

Posting on social media tonight, she said:  ‘Life has been turned upside down in the last weeks. We knew the risks of trying for another baby, stupidly optimistic maybe Hyperemesis wouldn’t be as bad this time. Wrong.

‘It’s been so severe even IV drips straight into me wouldn’t stop it. I was being sick every 20 minutes.

‘Steroids finally got it under control yet they come with so many side effects. By then my body was in meltdown, my blood salts and levels at dangerous levels. This has happened repeatedly and is so hard. I’ve spent so much time in hospital not only have I been physically floored, but mentally. I’ve never been so unwell.

‘So this isn’t a normal happy pregnancy announcement, I know we are lucky but this is a battle for survival every single day. For us both. I miss my life, I miss being a proper mum to Zac, I miss my work. I can’t wait to be back at work as soon as I’m able but this is why I’ve been off. My husband has become my carer literally dressing and washing me I’ve become so weak.

‘Somehow baby seems to be doing fine!

‘Thank you for your messages, I really hope to be better very soon and back doing what I love.’

Will hyperemesis gravidarum harm my baby?

HG can make you feel very unwell, but it’s unlikely to harm your baby if treated effectively.

However, if it causes you to lose weight during pregnancy, there is an increased risk that your baby may be born smaller than expected (have a low birthweight).

If your nausea and vomiting cannot be controlled, you may need to be admitted to hospital. This is so doctors can assess your condition and give you the right treatment to protect the health of you and your baby.

Owen, who has also been off screens in recent weeks, shared a picture of her hand connected to an IV drip in a hospital bed and a picture of the baby scan.

Supportive messages poured in from those both in and out of the sports world.

Welsh footballer Robert Earnshaw commented: ‘Get well soon. Big hugs and strength.’

Sports broadcaster Orla Chennaoui said: ‘Oh Michelle, I am so sorry to hear about this. Sending you all my love. You’re a warrior.’

Eilidh Barbour wrote: ‘Sending lots of love’ and Polly James commented ‘A true fighter…and one strong Mama. You’ve got this Mich, one hour one day at a time! Love you millions.’

Fellow mother and broadcaster Kirsty Gallacher said: ‘Sending o much love to you all Michelle’ and presenter Adam Smithy wrote: ‘Sending love to you and your family.’

The official EFL X account posted: ‘Thoughts with you and your family Michelle – and all the best in your recovery.’

If a woman has had HG before, it is likely she will get it again in another pregnancy, the NHS website says.
