  • Tessa Snow from Chester tested twice the alcohol limit on Janaury 6
  • The 58-year-old already had a previous conviction for drink driving

A 58-year-old supply teacher who downed wine in the pub before police caught her behind the wheel has been banned from driving.

Tessa Snow from Chester was spotted by officers driving her Volvo XC40 at a slow speed with her hazard lights on and also moving between the white lines on January 6.

She tested almost twice the alcohol limit despite initially denying that she had had a drink. Snow later admitted that she had been drinking wine in the pub with friends.

The supply teacher had just landed herself a full-time job at Overleigh St Mary’s Primary school in Chester.

Inquiries revealed that Snow also had a previous drink drive conviction from 2020.

But at Chester Magistrates Court she said on both occasions when she was caught behind the wheel over the alcohol limit that she had been in a ‘situation’ that she needed to get away from.

Becoming emotional, she apologised, admitted she had put her family through a lot of stress and revealed she would be able to walk to classes once she was disqualified from driving.

She pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and was also fined £300 with £240 in costs.

She was given the mandatory minimum three year ban due to it being the second time she had been caught drink driving in a ten-year period.

Miss Katie Johnson, prosecuting, said: ‘PC Burke and PC Evans were on duty on Vicarage Lane when they noticed a vehicle travelling along the road with its hazard lights illuminated, travelling at slow speed and appearing to be moving between the white lines.

‘The officers stopped the vehicle, driven by the defendant. The defendant initially indicated that she had not been drinking but then stated that she had been to the pub for a glass of wine.

‘Given that she had last had a drink within the last 15 minutes, the police waited 20 minutes before requesting a roadside breath test. She failed the roadside breath test and was arrested’.

When asked if she had anything to say, Snow, representing herself, said: ‘It is incredibly embarrassing, I have put my family through a lot of stress. I am a supply teacher. I do apologise.

‘I do need to go to different schools and drive – but I have managed to get a full-time job at a school within walking distance. I will be a supply teacher there. Because I need a consistent place of work, I managed to do that in a short space of time.

When asked about her previous conviction, Snow said she was going to take a course of cognitive behavioural therapy and added: ‘In both situations I had to leave somewhere.

‘For the first drink driving offence the mitigating circumstances were thrown out. The second time, I just had to leave a situation. We had a few drinks and I needed to leave.’

Sentencing JP John Rooney told Snow: ‘You have got yourself into a rather difficult situation with a second conviction but you have pleaded guilty and we give you credit for that.

‘Because this is the second disqualification the minimum we can give you is 36 months, indeed that is your disqualification, 36 months.

‘However, especially in light of your job, we are prepared to offer you the drink drive awareness rehabilitation course.

‘This is something that you would have to pay for. You would have to take a test while on it. If you pass that test, this could give you a 36-week reduction in your 36 months disqualification.’
