Piers Morgan has launched a scathing attack on Rishi Sunak over the treatment of his ‘terrified’ mother in an NHS hospital where she was left to languish on a bed in the corridor for nearly seven hours after having a heart attack.

The Prime Minister admitted it was ‘shocking’ 79-year-old Gabrielle ‘could have died on a trolley in A&E’ at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton

The Talk TV host told how his mother was blue-lighted to hospital at midnight on a Monday in November when she started experiencing chest pains.

Tests revealed she had suffered a heart attack but there were no beds available on the cardio unit.

Gabrielle was instead put on a trolley in the corridor with around 40 other patients crying in pain and begging for bottles to go to toilet in, in what was described as looking like a ‘warzone’.

Mr Morgan revealed the emotional personal story as he grilled Mr Sunak during an hour-long sit-down interview at No 10.

Recounting the night three months ago, he told the Prime Minister his sister, Charlotte, was fortunately able to go with his mother as he described the ordeal she had to go through.

‘And she was seen when she got there, and then she was put on a trolley in A&E, in a corridor, for nearly seven hours,’ he said.

‘The heart monitor battery ran out. Nobody fixed it. At one stage, no nurse came for three or four hours. There were between, she reckons, 35 and 40 other people on trolleys in the corridors of this A&E, most of them elderly without people.

‘She said old men were begging for bottles to urinate into, others were crying in pain or discomfort. She said it was a scene out of a warzone. And she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.’

The battery twice ran out on Gabrielle’s heart monitor during the overnight wait as there were no electric sockets nearby with it taking 15 minutes for it to be replaced. On both occasions it was her daughter who noticed the problem.

Mr Morgan said: ‘And she was also terrified, of course, having been told, ‘You’ve had a heart attack’, that no one was putting her into the unit and actually trying to fix her.’

He went on to say: ‘Once she got up there the treatment she got was world-class. She was fixed within 36 hours.

‘But I brought this one picture to show you. That’s my mum, who’s worked all her life, right? Paid her taxes all her life. And when she really needed the NHS. Yeah, eventually the NHS came through. But she could have died on that trolley and I think that’s shocking.’

Mr Morgan added: ‘This was a Monday night, Prime Minister. It wasn’t even a weekend. It’s not even a major city, this is Brighton. And there were 40 odd people on trolleys in a corridor. I mean, I found that, just how can this be happening?’

Writing in The Sun, Mr Morgan said his mother’s blood pressure ‘was raging dangerously out of control’ and she was left unchecked from 1am until 4am.

‘That’s a very long three hours for anyone when they know they’ve had a heart attack and think they may be dying,’ he said.

Mr Sunak agreed it was a shocking story and conceded ‘it’s not good enough the performance in A&E and ambulance waiting times’.

But he refused to admit the Tory government had failed the NHS since the party came to power in 2010 as ‘we are also dealing with the backlog and the legacy of COVID, which has just had an impact’.

He also appeared to take a swipe at nurses and doctors striking as Mr Sunak confessed he had failed on a pledge to cut NHS waiting lists which are nearly half a million more than it was at the start of last year.

Mr Sunak sayid: ‘Yes. And we all know the reasons for that and what I would say to people is look we’ve invested record amounts in the NHS, more doctors, more nurses, more scanners. All these things mean that the NHS is doing more today than it ever has been. But industrial action has had an impact.’

Recent NHS figures showed more than 150,000 patients — or one in nine — were made to wait 12 hours to be seen in A&E in December.

The full interview will be available to watch on Piers Morgan Uncensored’s YouTube channel from Monday at 2pm or on TalkTV at 8pm on Monday evening.
